Taking On Legal Parental Responsibilities

In contemporary families, it is increasingly common for adults other than a child’s biological parents to assume parental responsibilities. While the very notion of what a family is continues to evolve, there are still a number of laws that dictate who is and is not permitted to care for a child.

If you are looking to expand your family or strengthen your bond with a stepchild or child of a close relative, McGinnis Law Firm, P.A. can assist. Based near Brandon, and serving throughout the Tampa area and surrounding counties, we have helped a number of clients use adoption as a means to assume legal responsibility of a stepchild or an extended family member’s child and permanently secure that relationship. If you’re ready to take this step, we can help you, too.

Stepparent Adoption

In Florida, if you wish to adopt a stepchild, you must have the consent of your spouse. Additionally, the child’s other parent’s parental rights must be terminated. In many cases, the noncustodial parent must either agree to a termination of parental rights and responsibilities or the court must find that the noncustodial parent “abandoned” the child.

Drawing on more than 21 years of experience in the field, our firm can guide you through the adoption process and make sure you avoid any mistakes.

Close Relative Adoption

When a grandparent, aunt, uncle or sibling is in a better position to raise a child, relative adoption may be in everyone’s best interest. Our attorney guides family members through the process of permanently bringing a closely related child into their home.

At McGinnis Law Firm, P.A., we are prepared to assist you with the termination of parental rights and other adoption legalities including:

  • Clearly explaining adoption issues
  • Completing and filing necessary paperwork
  • Representation at hearings and other court proceedings
  • Powerful advocacy if challenges arise
